100 Women Who Care group supports women’s recovery home

January 9, 2025

Members of 100 Women Who Care Southern Delaware gathered Nov. 11 to present an award of $16,600 to the Barbara K. Brooks Transition House in Georgetown.

This donation marks the largest amount raised and awarded by this growing group of women. Through an ongoing partnership with 100WWCSD, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, based in Minnesota, contributed an additional $5,000 matching grant.

Founded eight years ago by Deborah Short, named for and in memory of her sister, the Barbara K. Brooks Transition House provides a safe, sober and structured living environment for women who are in recovery from life-controlling circumstances. Short said, “Our home in Georgetown is one of the first group homes for traumatized and vulnerable women who must re-enter a world filled with challenges. In our small-group setting, resident women support each other while learning about personal financial stability, job skills and searches, social interaction and spiritual growth.”

Sarah Harrison, one of the residents, expressed her deep appreciation for this community resource. “I love this place. I’ve changed drastically and grown exponentially, while still overcoming personal struggles. It is one of the best places I’ve ever been, both the setting and the leadership,” she said.
