14th RD Democratic Committee to host state senators Oct. 9
Three members of the Delaware Senate Democratic Committee will address the 14th Representative District Democratic Committee at its next meeting Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Iron Hill Brewery on Route 1 north of Rehoboth Beach. The program will begin at 5 p.m. with a Dutch treat dinner, followed by remarks from the senators at 6 p.m., and committee business at 6:30 p.m.
Guest speakers are Majority Leader Sen. Bryan Townsend and President Pro Tempore Sen. David Sokola, both D-Newark, and Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, a candidate for re-election in the 6th Senate District. The group will discuss recent legislative accomplishments and priorities for the next General Assembly.
Townsend, who represents the 11th Senate District, is the son of a retired police officer and a public schoolteacher. A graduate of the University of Cambridge and Yale Law School, he worked as a corporate attorney before being elected to the Delaware Senate in 2012. Democratic senators selected him as majority whip in 2018 and majority leader in 2020.
Sokola represents the 8th Senate District, and was first elected in 1990. He is best known for his work to improve Delaware’s education system, passing strong environmental laws and working to keep a balanced state budget. He was first chosen by his peers to serve as president pro tempore in 2021, and he currently serves as chair of the Senate Executive Committee and Joint Legislative Council Committee.
Huxtable, who was originally elected to the Senate in 2022, has quickly emerged as a legislative leader, writing and sponsoring critical bills involving affordable housing and prohibiting commercial development in Cape Henlopen State Park. He currently sits on seven Senate committees and serves as chair of the Agriculture Committee.
The 14th RD Committee represents Democrats who live in and around Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. All registered Democrats are welcome to participate in 14th RD meetings.
