A total of 380 runners representing 18 states showed up Fourth of July morning for the 15th running of the Dewey Beach Liquors 5K.
The top 24 runners broke 20 minutes, led by Stephen Garrett, a 24-year-old from Hockessin who cruised the course in 15:55. Garrett is currently an assistant track coach for the Tatnall Hornets, where he ran in high school.
Natalie Danniels, 29, of Fredericksburg, Va., was the first woman and 12th overall in 18:40.
Matthew Wagoner, 44, was first male masters runner and second overall in 16:11. Alysia Puma, 49, of Flemington, N.J., was the first female masters runner in 22:07.
Highlights: Noel Relyea, 75, of Cupertino, Calif., set a course record on the Ivy course in 40:13. The 5K state record for women 75-79 is held by Joann Szczepkowski in 28:54.
Landon Bratz, 8, of Bridgeville won the 9-and-under male age group in 22:42. The top three males in 14-18 all broke 20 minutes, including Brendan Beamer in 19:37, Ronald Puag in 19:52 and Greg Borden in 19:57.
Colten Morris of Lewes won the 19-24 division in 16:20. Morris was followed by Luke Schneider in 17:15 and Connor Paszkliewicz in 18:09.
Francisco Puac, 36, of Georgetown won the 35-39 age group in 16:48.
The top 5 males in the 40-44 age group all broke 20 minutes, led by John Becker in 16:22. He was followed to the line by Matty Sparacino in 18:36, Daniel Spahr in 19:34, Josh Houtkin in 19:44 and Jon Fassnacht in 19:49.
Mike Wardian captured the 45-49 age-group title with a time of 17:03. He was followed by Bill McNary in 18:21 and Kyle Brightbill in 18:46.
Jules Woodall, 73, continues to crank out age-group wins, placing first in 70-74 in 27:58.
