Adeline’s New York brightens up Rehoboth

June 18, 2010

The first thing you notice about Adeline’s New York in Rehoboth Beach is the bright pink building.

Co-owner Alper Akgoren said, “Eye-catching, right? That’s the point. We want it to be visible, but we didn’t want it to look ugly on the other side. Pink is a color that attracts girls, and that is our target clientele. That was my sister’s idea, actually.”

Besides choosing the store’s color, Akgoren’s sister, Adeline, is also the source of the name, as well as co-owner of the store.

Adeline’s is a women’s fashion accessory store, 101 Rehoboth Ave. in the old Record and Tape Traders building. The store is the third in town for the Akgorens, whose Adeline’s and Albert’s gift shop are on the first floor of First Street Station.

“We’ve been looking for a really good spot, just to settle down. This was the best we could get, which was one of the prime locations in town. We opened this one almost two-and-a-half months ago, and we’ve had a really good response,” Akgoren said.

Adeline’s carries the latest trends in fashion jewelry, he said.

“Fashion jewelry is a jewelry that isn’t gold or silver or diamonds. It’s a jewelry that doesn’t cost a lot of money. We try to carry a good quality of it so it doesn’t change color or tarnish,” Akgoren said. “We pick everything personally from New York.”

Among the merchandise selection are sunglasses, gift items and lots of hair accessories, such as bows, headbands, hair wraps and hair clips. Younger customers can also get airbrushed tattoos.

Akgoren said the new store would have a different style of merchandise than the First Street Station store, which will have more dressy styles.

The Akgorens, originally from Long Island, have had several shops in the area. Their first location was in Ocean City, Md.; next they opened a store in Rehoboth. The family liked Rehoboth so much they decided to relocate there full time.

Akgoren said he hopes to expand and have more Adeline’s in the future, possibly in Lewes or Bethany Beach. “I have really high expectations. I still believe in the American dream, and I think we can make it really big here. This is just the beginning of this story. We’d like to have more locations,” Akgoren said.

Adeline’s is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., 9 a.m. to midnight after July 4.
