Ala von Auersperg trunk show at Stuart Kingston

May 21-23 sale features clothing fit for royalty
May 20, 2019

Dresses, kaftans and tops fit for royalty will be available at an Ala von Auersperg trunk show at Stuart Kingston in Rehoboth May 21-23.

Ala was born Princess Annie-Laurie von Auersperg to American socialite Martha “Sunny” Crawford and Austrian Prince Alfred von Auersperg. After the royal couple divorced, Sunny married Claus von Bulow. In December 1980, Sunny went into a coma, in which she remained until her death in 2008.

Von Bulow was convicted of attempting to murder her by an insulin overdose, but his conviction was overturned, and a second trial found him not guilty. The story was dramatized in the book and movie “Reversal of Fortune.”

Ala said an interest in crimes against women prompted her, with family and friends, to found the National Center for Victims of Crime in 1983.

“Women who are victimized often lose everything in the aftermath of a violent crime,” she said. “I support the organization personally and through a portion of proceeds from our business.”

Ala designs her own clothing line, which also includes apparel for bridesmaids and mothers of the bride, based on her art.

“I had been painting and drawing for several years when a fashion designer friend of mine saw my drawings,” she said. “He suggested we digitize them and print them on fabrics to use for my clothes.  Friends saw me wear them and wanted to have them for themselves. We have had a lot of fun growing it from there.”

Ala said she is inspired by nature, particularly gardens and the beach.

“I spend time in the Caribbean and love the seashells and sea life I find there,” she said. “I love beautiful gardens and have derived hours of pleasure painting the beautiful things I find in my garden in Long Island.”

The trunk show will run from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 22 and Thursday, May 23.
