All for state government intervention to stop development

August 12, 2025

I have no problem with the state stepping in to overrule Sussex County government. I don't have much confidence that the rate of overbuilding is going to change with the present county government. The planning & zoning commission seems to bend over backward to approve subdivisions no matter the effect on the public infrastructure or what the public opinion is. The county government makes rules full of loopholes that allow growth everywhere, then say they are just following the rules! I think if they did a poll of Sussex County residents, asking if they wanted a moratorium on permits for new housing developments, it would win by a landslide, so why not commission such a poll?

I see the new head of the planning & zoning commission is a person who spent most of her life in the construction industry. As for the working group put together to recommend change to help control growth, I don't have much hope. The group seems to be made up of half for controlled growth and half for uncontrolled growth, so what will come of that? As for me, please, state government, come in and take over if that is what it takes to stop the madness.
