Alvin V. Mumford, active in church

Alvin V. Mumford, 88, of Georgetown passed away peacefully at Seasons Hospice at Christiana Hospital Monday, Dec. 7, 2020.  

Mr. Mumford was born Sept. 16, 1932, to the late Horace and Verda (Parsons) Mumford.  Alvin retired from ACME after more than 30 years.  

Alvin was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he served as trustee, and a member of the Men’s Sunday School.  He also volunteered at Georgetown Little League and was a member of Georgetown Vol. Fire Co. for 66 years after joining in 1954.  He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s athletic events.    

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin Mumford, Merrill Mumford, Wayne Mumford, Elijah Mumford; and his sister, Grace Shockley.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Peggy Phillips Mumford; son, Ronald (Kay) Mumford; and daughter, Jayne Ellen (Mike) Dickerson; grandchildren, Terri Penuel and fiancé Tony Rutherford, Tyler (Liz) Dickerson, Jordan (Geri) Dickerson, and Jason (Jamie) Dickerson; great-grandsons, Luke, Nash, Grady, Grant and Rhett Dickerson; and one great-grandchild on the way.  

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m., at Grace UM Church, 7 S. King St., Georgetown, where friends may call after noon.  Interment will follow at Union Cemetery.  All in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing and gathering protocols.
