American Legion Post 17 and JROTC assist with Thanksgiving food drive

November 30, 2018

On a chilly and blustery day Nov. 10, American Legion Post 17 family and the Cape Henlopen High School JROTC partnered with the Rehoboth Beach Safeway to support the Mountaire Farms Thanksgiving for Thousands food drive. The project’s goal is to provide Thanksgiving meals to more than 50,000 food-insecure individuals throughout the state.

Volunteers from Post 17 and JROTC cadets greeted shoppers at the store entrance and provided them with a donation item list. Suggested purchases included canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravies, and stuffing and brownie mixes. The cadets helped collect the donated items upon the shoppers’ exit.

At the end, Safeway shoppers had donated 37 large boxes of food in just a few hours. Mountaire Farms trucks came by and collected the boxes from Safeway, and from many other participating grocers. The food was organized for distribution, and Mountaire  included a chicken roaster for each household.

The American Legion Post 17 family members are honored to be a part of the entire community’s coming together and making a positive difference this Thanksgiving.

Post 17 volunteers included Sons Chaplain John Hammond, Legionnaire Jeff Cianflone, auxiliary member Sandy Keen, auxiliary President Murt Foos, Post Service Officer Bert Long, and Post Finance Officer Dan Catts.
