American Legion Post 17 to hold Memorial Day events in Lewes

Poppy Program donations help support area veterans year-round
May 21, 2023

Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by U.S. veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921. This year, National Poppy Day will be observed Friday, May 26.

The American Legion Post 17 family in Lewes will create two memorial poppy fields to mark this Memorial Day, one at the lighthouse garden on Kings Highway and the other at Post 17, 113 American Legion Road. All are invited to leave a memorial card on one of the poppies in the field to honor loved ones who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Post 17 representatives will be offering crepe poppies and accepting donations at several area locations including Surf Bagel, Ace Hardware stores in Lewes and Milford, and at the Saturday, May 27 Historic Lewes Farmers Market. Donations support AL veterans programs year-round, and go directly to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans in area communities.

American Legion Post 17 will host a Veterans Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m., Monday, May 29, starting from the Presbyterian Church parking lot at 133 Kings Highway, proceeding to Savannah Road over the canal and ending at the post facility on American Legion Road.

Lewes community members are encouraged to line the streets wearing patriotic attire and waving flags to support the veterans walking, riding, biking and driving in the parade as a Memorial Day tribute to all who have fallen in service to America.

The post’s annual Memorial Day Tribute Ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in the pavilion at 113 American Legion Road. All are welcome!
