American Legion Post 17 hosts fishing day for veterans

August 12, 2018

American Legion Post 17 of Lewes sponsored its 11th annual veterans fishing trip June 21. In all, 29 veterans and 28 legion volunteers trekked out to the pier at Cape Henlopen State Park. Participating veterans came from the Delaware Veterans Home and Home of the Brave in Milford, as well as from Dover Air Force Base.

The tide was low and horseshoe crabs were feasting on the bait, but the veterans enjoyed the hazy, breezy day. Coffee, doughnuts and ice water were provided on the pier with funds from the auxiliary’s recent poppy fundraiser. A hearty lunch was served at Post 17 to all participants. Pocket flags were presented to the veterans, and much-needed clothing, laundry supplies and food were sent home with them as well.

American Legion Post 17 has been sponsoring this trip for 11 years, and it has been a great way for veterans to help fellow veterans. Seeing them standing outside on a pier and helping veterans bait their fishing lines while recalling their days of military service together is a sight to behold. With the help of the Unit 17 Auxiliary, the Sons of Post 17 and four young active-duty people from Dover Air Force Base, all the fishing equipment, coolers and wheelchairs were unloaded and pushed down the long pier.

Veterans need to have fun, fellowship and a place to find the resources they need, and American Legion Post 17 family members are proud to be of assistance.
