Community members invited to wear patriotic attire, wave flags
May 23, 2024

The American Legion Post 17 family will sponsor its traditional Memorial Day Parade starting at 11 a.m., Monday, May 27, from the Lewes Presbyterian Church parking lot at 133 Kings Highway, Lewes.

Participants will gather on Schley Avenue near the Lewes Board of Public Works for staging. The parade will proceed from the church lot to Savannah Road, cross the canal bridge toward Lewes Beach, and finish at Post 17 on American Legion Road.

The parade is a tribute to all who were lost in service to the United States, and their family and friends. Post 17 members will pay tribute to the POW/MIAs with a float and also feature a Poppy Float to symbolize the crosses and cemeteries where American soldiers lie around the world. Veterans of all ages are welcome to walk with the Post 17 group, or find a convertible car or ride in one of the post’s military vehicles.

A Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at approximately 1 p.m. in the Post 17 Pavilion; all are welcome.

Any military member now serving and all veterans are encouraged to participate, wearing their uniforms, or legion or patriotic attire. Everyone will gather at the post at 9:30 a.m. for assignment to vehicles and be provided with flags for branch of service.

Those who are interested in joining the parade or have a veteran they wish to honor may contact Murt Foos at 301-706-0213 or murtfoos@yahoo.com.
