Anthony "Tony" Michael Caputo, 69, of South Bethany and Mechanicville, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in his sleep after a seven-year battle with prostate cancer.
Tony was devoted to Lora, his wife of 14 years, and his four children. Tony enjoyed hosting his family at the beach. He spent 69 Christmases surrounded by family in Mechanicville. He loved helping his family and friends whenever possible by managing their taxes, remodeling homes, giving valuable counsel or simply being the person you could count on. He most enjoyed spending time boating in South Bethany, traveling the world, visiting lighthouses, attending country music concerts and taking in college football games.
Tony graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1964 and SUNY Albany four years later. He was the captain of his high school football team and played semi-professional football while in college. In 1969 he joined the Army National Guard as a medic. In 1970 he joined the accounting firm Touche Ross as a CPA; he went on to work for the City of Rochester, Price Waterhouse, AMS and finally landing at SCT in Malvern, Pa., where he retired at the age of 52.
Upon retirement Tony applied his financial background to helping local groups, including the South Bethany Town Council, Sussex County Republican Committee, South Bethany Water Quality Committee and the South Bethany Property Owners Association. He was proud of his work, helping bring “The Best Little Beach in Delaware” to publication for the South Bethany Historical Society.
Tony is survived by his wife Lora; his sisters Sylvia Ermalowicz and Linda Donahu; his son Collin Caputo and his wife Leah; daughter Julia Caputo; son James Sonntag; daughter Dr. Liz Sonntag; and grandchildren Caroline and Will.
