April Fools race results replete with identity theft

Event draws 39 runners for smallest race of the year
April 1, 2017

Confusion planned is no less confusing than those spontaneously stupid, risky moments like pulling into traffic or riding a 6-foot wave that sucks all the water out to sea then drops you face first into wet sand and baby clam shells.

Race Director Tim Bamforth, running out of ideas for the 23rd annual April Fools race, mixed up all the bibs so the results are “fake news,” which is pretty popular in Washington these days. The 4.3-mile race was won by Delmar high school lacrosse player Austen Cave in 25:05, but the win was credited to Paul Bradley, 61, out of Wilmington.

Runners were placed in the proper age group of the person whose bib they were wearing, which helped no one unravel the mystery of who ran what.

Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, seemed the least confused of anyone. He just shook everyone’s hand and said, “Good job.”

The fifth annual Oy Vey 5K Run and Walk is set for 9 a.m., Sunday, April 2, on Holland Glade Road at the Seaside Jewish Community Center. The race will have plenty of kugel to nosh.
