ArcoStrum to take Coastal Concerts stage April 18
Coastal Concerts will present a live performance by ArcoStrum at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Bethel United Methodist Church hall, Fourth and Market streets, Lewes.
The dynamic violin-guitar duo reimagines traditional Chinese music, modern rock and classical masterworks. The duet’s award-winning musicians are Strauss Shi on violin, erhu and dizi; and TY Zhang on classical guitar and electric guitar.
The program promises to be a genre-busting showcase that seamlessly moves from contemporary tango to timeless classical and Chinese compositions. Among the pieces will be selections from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” Domenico Scarlatti’s “Keyboard Sonata,” tango composer Astor Piazzola’s “Invierno Porteño” and “Nightclub 1960” from Histoire du Tango, an arrangement called “Michael Jackson Meets Scarlatti” by the Hungarian guitar duo Katona Twins, American composer John Williams’ theme from “Schindler’s List” and a selection of works by Chinese composers.
The artists will sometimes use traditional Chinese instruments that allow them to imitate such sounds of nature as horse and bird calls. These include the erhu, a two-string Chinese fiddle; a flute dizi, a Chinese bamboo flute; and the piccolo dizi, a smaller Chinese bamboo flute.
