Are connected communities really better?

July 21, 2023

The editorial board seemed to miss the point in its July 14 editorial. Neither community has proposed a gate that would affect emergency response time. Both will include technology to allow emergency vehicles access – if those vehicles choose to travel through the communities (which I doubt will be the preferred routes.) Both have plans for pedestrian and bicycle through traffic. The point of the proposed gates is to limit vehicular through traffic in residential communities. The roads were not designed or built for volumes that could occur during congestion from growing summertime beach and ferry traffic. I can only guess at the impact of prolonged construction phases along Kings Highway and Gills Neck Road as approved communities, shopping centers and restaurants are built, and DelDOT implements its plan for traffic circles at every major intersection.

Public safety – as described in the editorial – and interconnectivity are two separate issues. People suggesting a link may be against anything that restricts free access to whatever route they prefer. I don't blame anyone for looking for a shortcut. But shame on those who suggest these gates could cost people their lives. The people who live in these communities strongly support the gates.
