Athletes of the Week April 10

April 10, 2020
Dominic Feightner

Dominic was captain of the Milford wrestling team and a four-year letter winner. He was considered a key component to Milford’s wrestling success the last four years. Dominic was recently awarded the annual Alfred “Buddy” Hurlock Memorial Scholarship, a $10,000 award from the Delaware Wrestling Alliance. Dominic was a tough out in the 145-pound weight class his senior season. He maintained a 4.68 GPA, taking all honors and Advanced Placement classes. He was a three-sport athlete and named academic all-conference in wrestling, cross country and golf. He is vice president of the Milford National Honor Society and a member of student government. He volunteered his photography skills and served as the school photographer for the high school. Dominic is heading to West Virginia University to major in aerospace engineering.

Logan Mathews

A Beebe baby has returned to the crib. Logan graduated from Cape Henlopen in 2013, where he excelled as a long pole defender on the lacrosse team. A long pole including head is 72 inches, the recommended space for social distancing. But that’s not possible for Logan, a 25-year-old physician’s assistant working in the emergency department of Beebe Healthcare. Logan also played Atlantic Lacrosse, and he’s always been a great kid. Steve Spence, Tommy Kane and Tom Frederick were his coaches at the U15 level when they won the Eastern Shore League Championship in 2009. Longtime assistant coach for Cape boys’ lacrosse Geoff Shupard said, “Logan held down the defense with Tommy Ott and Garrett Becker, who were juniors. I believe he was honorable mention all-state.” Logan is definitely honorable mention of the All-Beebe Baby Team, working tirelessly keeping the muppets of the village safe.

Henry White

Family calls him Junior; friends and coaches call him Henry; if you ask living people who have seen all the Cape football running backs who were the best, the most frequent answer will be Henry White. Back in 1973, Henry was first-team all-state and was the MVP that summer in the Blue-Gold All-Star Game. Henry was the designated leadoff man on the Cape track relay teams, including the 440, 880 and mile relays. Those Cape track teams 1971-73 had a record of 32-0 and three state titles under coach Tom Hickman. Henry went on to star at Colgate University from 1974-77. In his senior year, he was MVP of the Blue/Gray All-Star game and was a UPI and New York Times All-East selection. Henry finished just behind Earl Campbell of Texas in all-purpose his senior season. Henry was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and made the final cut, but elected to move on to enjoy a long career in the business world.

Lance White

A three-year cross country and track runner at Cape who graduated in 1978, Lance White was the most successful and prolific runner over the 51-year history of Cape Henlopen High School, with Emory Howell (1973) and Danny Harmon (1983) running close seconds. Lance was two-time cross country state champion and only lost to teammate Jay Reed in the finals his sophomore year. Lance ran 9:00 for 3K and 4:00 for 1.5K. His senior year, Lance was a defensive specialist on the basketball team. He took a break on a January Tuesday night in 1978 and won the Invitational Two Mile at the Civic Center in Philly in a state record time of 9:29, then came back on Friday night to win the mile at the Philadelphia Track Classic in 4:27. Both races were tactical runs on an 11th of a mile banked track. Lance ran for Edinboro University, then joined the Marine Corps. He has lived with his wife in Rome, Italy, for the last 30 years.
