Athletes of the Week Feb. 2

February 2, 2024
Sara Davis

A junior at Cape, Sara Davis is in her second year as an athlete on the unified basketball team. A high-scoring forward, she recently tallied 12 points in the Vikings’ 55-50 victory over Polytech at Cape's gymnasium. Sara has a soft touch, and she can hit from underneath the basket or a jumper from the outside. "Sara has an explosive personality that she brings onto the court, and it is contagious to all the players on her team and even the opponents," said Cape unified head coach Katie Collick. "She has scored eight-plus points in three out of our five games. She loves to give the halftime speech at every game and refers to every opponent as beef jerky. She works hard at practices and continues to grow as a player and teammate." About her experience on the unified team, Sara said, “I love playing on this team and I love my teammates.”

Hudson Senard

Freshman 120-pound wrestler Hudson Senard was put in position to have a magic moment because the captain’s coin flip came up red, which meant Cale Baker would go out at 113 to take on Caesar Rodney hammer Cole Moffett. Senard entered his bout with a record of 2-8, while his opponent Ashton Graham was 16-14. Senard was trailing by two points late in the first quarter and the Cape crowd seemed resigned to a less-than-positive outcome. Then suddenly a move no one saw coming. Senard threw the high-riding Graham off his back and onto the mat with his shoulder blades touching and the ref did not hesitate to slap the mat. “I am not surprised,” said Cape assistant Shane Jensen. “Hudson is just a hard athlete and tough kid, only a freshman.” There are some bad hombres in his weight class. The Cape crowd and bench all went to Bonkersville. Senard now moves into the grinder phase of the season. One thing is for sure: count on him showing up.

Jameson Tingle

This freshman has been a grown man on the hardwood for the Cape boys’ basketball squad, putting up team highs of 13.3 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per night and taking over games with his fearless physicality. In a recent loss to St. Vincent Pallotti, Jameson exploded for career highs of 31 points and 13 boards, flashing an advanced midrange game and beating box-outs for put-back scores. After a so-so start to the year that was marred by an ankle injury, Tingle has found his rhythm of late, averaging 18 points and 11 boards over his last six games. Poised beyond his years, full of fast-twitch quickness, and essentially positionless, Tingle has Division I written all over him and could be the Vikings’ main attraction for years to come. “Everyone knows that Jameson has talent, skills and the size the match,” said coach Steve Re. “With all of that, he has the most attribute of all – great character. He is a great young man with a quiet humility and confidence.”

Ashtyn Torbert

A senior three-sport athlete and four-year starter for the Dover Senators, Ashtyn is a captain on the field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams. She has also played Eastern Shore Lacrosse since she was 5 years old. Asytyn has battled Cape powerhouse teams her four years of high school and never backed down. This year’s Dover basketball team is the surprise of the First State. The Senators have beaten Cape twice – 48-44 early in the season and, most recently, 64-59 at Cape. Ashtyn scored 23 points in the comeback win at Cape.  Ashtyn is an honors and AP student with a 4.0 GPA , a member of the National Honor Society and on the Rolling Thunder Drumline. She will attend Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa., where she will play lacrosse while majoring in physical therapy with the goal of earning her doctorate. Her sister Regan is a junior goalie at Stevenson University. Kevin Charles, former DIAA executive director, is her grandfather.
