Athletes of the Week Jan. 2

January 2, 2026
Andrew Collins

In the Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball team’s 60-53 win over Washington to start the Governor's Challenge, Andrew tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. He added an assist and a block. Playing in the nation's largest holiday tournament has been on the senior's high school bucket list since he was a freshman. "Andrew has really grown a lot," coach Pat Woods said. "He has worked hard on changing his body and also slowing his pace so he can be more effective around the rim. He is scoring the ball better and actually is one of our highest assist guys by kicking it out when double-teamed."

Grayce Glover

Weeks’ worth of work paid dividends for this Sussex Academy junior, as she powered her team past Holly Grove and into the Salisbury Christian bracket final with an 11-point, nine-rebound performance against the Eagles. She followed that up with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the final against the host. This three-sport athlete lends her talents to the volleyball team and softball team. She is hoping to play softball at a small school in Pennsylvania in college. Glover is also secretary of the FFA chapter at Sussex Academy.

Liam Roth

Liam is a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Chicago. He is a Rehoboth Beach summer kid who attended St. Andrew’s, where he played football and wrestled. He now plays rugby for the Maroons, who just completed a 10-1-1 season, losing to eventual nation champion Vermont in the semifinals. Liam is listed as a back row. Liam played rugby when his family lived in Singapore. He plans to pursue a course of study in either physics or economics. He has spent long summers around town working at the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association, the Mill Creamery and the UD physics lab. Liam is a licensed rescue diver.

Malachi Stratton

Malachi of Sussex Central was a four-time state champ and the first 200-match winner in state history. Malachi is now grappling for George Mason University. At the recent Big Red Open in Ithaca, N.Y., Malachi won the 125-pound championship after winning all three bouts. The freshman rolled to a 21-5 technical fall and a 13-3 major before winning a close 2-1 decision in the Group B championship. Malachi is a natural lightweight, moving into a college lineup where the lightest weight class is 125 pounds. College wrestling often enters more than one wrestler per weight class depending on the tournament.

Gideon Woods

This senior is back on the Delmarva Christian boys' basketball team after two years off and is doing what he can to help his teammates win. At the Governor's Challenge, Gideon snagged five boards, blocked three shots and had two steals in the Royals' 60-53 win over Washington (Md.) Dec. 26. He followed that up by grabbing five rebounds and collecting two more steals in the finale against Crisfield. Gideon fills a few roles for the Royals, and is one of the glue-guys who is happy to fill space when a void is created.
