Athletes of the Week March 27

March 30, 2020
Austin Elliott

A center fielder and pitcher and all-state player on the 2018 Cape state championship baseball team, Austin was recruited as a pitcher to the University of North Carolina, one of the premier college teams in the country. He was redshirted his freshman year, but hung tough in school and sports, and this season as a redshirt freshman was in the mix on the Tarheels’ pitching staff. Cape coach Ben Evick said, “Austin had settled into becoming a pitcher only and proved to have great stuff for UNC. He was getting middle relief innings and getting the nod from the coaches more and more.” Like other college players, Austin is looking forward to a summer of playing baseball.

David Erickson

David is an in-the-groove pitcher who stays around the plate with high velocity. He breaks his curveball for strikes anywhere in the count. He started the state championship game versus Caravel at Frawley Stadium back in 2018 and struck out nine before running out of pitches. Mason Fluharty came in and recorded the final out. David was a sophomore on the Liberty University staff when the college baseball season was abruptly halted. Cape coach Ben Evick said, “David has mid-90s stuff on the mound and looked to be the closer for Liberty this year. Like our other athletes playing in college, he has made Cape baseball proud.”

Mason Fluharty

A junior first baseman, spot starter and left-handed reliever on the 2018 Cape state championship team, lefty Mason will always be remembered for striking out the final Caravel batter and putting the state championship trophy on Half Stockley’s bus that got a police and fire escort from Route 16 back to the high school in Lewes. Coach Ben Evick said, “Mason stepped in as a big strong lefty that had an immediate impact on the Liberty University staff. He was a middle relief guy getting midweek and weekend opportunities. He worked his butt off taking his talents to another level.”

Zack Gelof

Zack had a storied high school career at Cape, excelling in soccer and baseball. He was blessed with size and speed, all wrapped inside a great attitude. Zack is the quintessential great teammate with a proven history of meeting the big moments. Coach Ben Evick said, “Gelof was the three-hitter on a very solid Virginia team that was No. 17 in the country. He was leading the Wahoos in many offensive categories. All our guys were making Cape baseball proud. Zack is set for summer ball since the world took a weird turn and ended the college baseball season.” Zack will always be a big part of the 2018 Cape hardball story that delivered the first and only state championship in 50 years of Cape sports. And he is one of Cape’s all-time great soccer players.
