Kasen Adams
This Mariner Middle eighth-grader led the baseball team with a .606 average, 21 hits, 16 runs scored, 14 RBIs, five doubles and 17 stolen bases in 11 games. The lefty also had 43 strikeouts in 21 innings. This summer Kasen will be playing for Team USA in the Latin America Baseball Classic in the Dominican Republic. “Kasen is an outstanding young man who leads by example and earns the respect of his peers through his actions,” said coach UJ Johnson. “On the field, he’s a strong competitor who is always willing to do whatever it takes to help his team succeed. Kasen is a true team player, always giving his best effort regardless of the score. As a pitcher, Kasen always maintains his composure and never backs down from a challenge. Every time he takes the mound, I have complete confidence in his ability to compete and lead with heart and determination.”
Jacob Gabbard
Jacob shot a five-under 33 in a May 16 playoff against Polytech at Rehoboth Beach Country Club to lead the Vikings to the golf team’s first Henlopen North title since 2004. Helped by an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole, Jacob went five strokes below his previous season low of 38 made April 14 at Heritage Shores. The senior played all four years for Cape’s golf team and contributed to the success of the Vikings’ swim team. He begins work this weekend in his second year as a lifeguard at Cape Henlopen State Park and is working toward an EMT credential.
Tommy Warren
This Sussex Tech senior lacrosse goalie recorded his 200th career save during the Senior Day game against Delmar May 15. He finished with 209 career saves and a 77% save percentage in his career. This season, he had a 67% save percentage. “Tommy had an amazing season this year and really helped keep us in some close games this season,” said coach Ryan Doherty. “Being a goalie in the Henlopen North is difficult, but he never backed down and made some amazing saves for us this season. He will be greatly missed by the Sussex Tech boys’ lacrosse program.” Tommy also swam all four years for the Ravens.
Lacie Wilkins
This Delmarva Christian eighth-grader excels not only academically in the classroom, but also on the field hockey and softball fields. Lacie played for both the middle school and varsity hockey team this year. She also plays softball for Delmarva Christian and Delmarva Heat. During a recent game against Salisbury Christian, the team was down by eight runs, but rallied back. With two outs, Lacie, a team captain, came to the plate and with runners on first and third and the team down two. With a 3-2 count, Lacie hit the ball over the center-field fence to walk to the game off 14-13. She was humble and showed grace.
