Athletes of the Week May 7

May 7, 2021
Peyton Hagy

It was the best and worst of games for Sussex Academy junior goalie Peyton Nagy April 30 at Champions Stadium. Cape scored 17 times in a 17-10 victory, but the Vikings were turned away 14 times, as Nagy faced 31 shots. The shots Nagy stopped were legit, on a doorstop, with multiple Vikings stoned with “no way” emphasis. The Seahawks are 10-1 on the season. Nagy has played nine games where the opponent has scored six goals or fewer, including six games where she allowed three or fewer. The kid is crazy good, and she does it smoothly, without frenzy. She sees the ball and she can clear the ball. Peyton had 13 saves March 29 in a 13-8 win over Archmere. There’s a big game coming up for the Seahawks Tuesday, May 11, when they head on the road to Ursuline. It’s guaranteed that hall of fame coach Feffie Barnhill of Ursuline knows all about Peyton Hagy.

Lea Jaoude

Lea recently returned from the Boys & Girls Club Nationals swim meet in Tampa, Fla., with the trophy for most points scored in the 8-and-under girls’ division. Lea won the 100-yard individual medley, 100-yard free, 25-yard breaststroke, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard breaststroke and 25-yard backstroke. She also finished second in the 25-yard free and 25-yard fly for a total of 156 points in the meet. Now 9, this Worcester Prep third-grader started swimming competitively for the Lewes Yacht Club at 5 years old. She currently swims for Mako Swim Club. At the Tampa event, Lea swam with Western Sussex Boys & Girls Club, which is a collective of swimmers from Mako, Ocean Pines and Barracudas.

Emily Monigle

Emily is a four-year starter in lacrosse and plays middie for Cape, but there is nothing maudlin about Monigle, who plays large in the biggest games. Versus Sussex Academy April 30, possession started on the draw control, where she was dominant, and ended with Emily burying shots. She had six goals for the game against Peyton Nagy, who is among the best goalies in the state. Emily is a two-way player who also plays great defense. “Emily is a captain and a leader who seizes the moment,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “She has to be considered for Delaware Player of the Year honors.” In a come-from-behind 11-10 win April 19 at Ursuline, Emily had four goals and three assists, and won important draws coming down the stretch.

Ella Rishko

Wind her up and watch her go. Just call her Ella Rishko. A legit throwback three-sport starter in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, Rishko can roll. She’s a player who will always do the dirty work, plays best in transition and doesn’t check the scorebook for stats, just the scoreboard for the final score. Ella had five goals and two assists in the April 30 win over Sussex Academy. Coaches know when it’s time to step up, Ella will beast up every time.  Ella had a hat trick in the April 10 loss at St. Mary’s, just a demonstration that she wasn’t going down without a fight. Ella, a junior, is verbally committed to attend Virginia Tech to play lacrosse.
