Author Elisabeth Griffith to discuss new women’s rights book Oct. 18
Dr. Elisabeth Griffith, women’s rights activist and academic, will discuss her new book, “Formidable: American Women and the Fight for Equality 1920-2020,” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. Presented by the library and Browseabout Books, the event will also be streamed online via Zoom.
Griffith will be joined by Ann Compton, former news reporter and White House correspondent for ABC News, to discuss Griffith’s riveting chronicle of the fight by white and Black women to achieve equality. Previously the parallel struggles for social justice have been presented separately - as white or Black topics - or covered narrowly, through only certain individuals, decades, or incidents. “Formidable” provides a sweeping, integrated perspective and explores how women are still grappling with how to use the vote and their political power to expand civil rights, confront racial violence, improve maternal health, advance educational and employment opportunities, and secure reproductive rights.
Griffith, former Kennedy Fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and Klingenstein Fellow at Columbia Teachers College, has spent her career working for women’s rights. She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and professional journals. Her book “In Her Own Right: The Life of Elizabeth Cady Stanton” was the inspiration for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary “Not for Ourselves Alone.”
