Upon arriving in the City of Rehoboth Beach at 5:45 p.m., I parked in a handicap spot on the corner of Rehoboth Avenue and Second Street and placed my handicap placard on the rearview mirror. I used the ParkMobile app and paid for two hours of parking for a total of $8.50. Upon coming out from a lovely dinner at Sirocco and within the two hours of parking, I saw that I had a parking ticket on my car. At first, I’m thinking, no way, I haven’t exceeded the time. But then I read the ticket and it indicated that I was parking in a handicap spot for the post office only. The ticket was for $50! I then read the one handicap parking sign that read, “For post office only, 24 hours.” The ticket, in my opinion, was certainly more demonstrative than the sign itself for making someone aware of the consequences by parking there!
The post office closes at 5 p.m. I arrived at that spot at 5:45. Granted, had I read the sign more carefully, I would have not parked there, I get it. But considering the limited amount of handicap spots in Rehoboth Beach, I never thought to read the fine print. I saw the blue sign and the words “handicap parking,” and park I did.
So, once again, it appears that Rehoboth Beach is sticking it to locals and visitors to the city. Why, in any logical sense, would the town initiate a violation for handicap parking for the post office after it closes? This is a warning for many other handicapped people who will find a ticket if they park there after post office hours or on Sundays! I guess they have to make up for that $4 million deficit one way or the other!
I live in Lewes, and I can assure you that this will be the last time I will be going into Rehoboth Beach during the parking meter period (not to mention they have highest cost to park on all of Delmarva). They really should be ashamed of themselves for having a handicap sign such as that one in front of the post office located on the main street.
