Bagel Bombers win Field of Dreams tournament

August 4, 2022

If you build it, they will come. Those words from the 1989 classic baseball movie “Field of Dreams” proved to be prophetic, as thousands of baseball players, young and old, have traveled to Dyersville, Iowa, to see the famed cornfield baseball diamond. Some are even lucky enough to play on the same field where Kevin Costner and Dwier Brown once had a father-son catch.

The boys of the 12U Bagel Bombers team coached by Lance Mears can count themselves in that category. And not only did they get to play on the movie site field, they also won the 11-team Summer Corn Belt Classic tournament July 31, defeating a team from Chicago in the championship match 14-7.

After dropping the first game against River Valley Renegades 11-8 July 29, the Bombers won every other game. They defeated Cresco Rippers 11-3 and Renegade River Valley 14-5 July 30, before topping B.I.G. Barnstormers 11-6 and Chicago Heat 14-7 July 31.

The team comprises boys from Cape Henlopen, Sussex Academy, Indian River, Milford and Caesar Rodney schools. Players include Kaden Spencer, Colin Taylor, Lukin Jones, Ben Tollett, Jace Troxler, Mason Sampson, Kamerin Rice-Reed, Deacon Herring, Caleb Dufrense, Carter Staggs, Lane Mears and Tristen Willey. Coaches include Lance Mears, Theo Bowe and Kyle Jones.
