Balance overcomes lack of wind to win its class

Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May takes home Cape-to-Cape Challenge cup
August 6, 2019

Lewes Yacht Club boat Balance, captained by Richard Beebe, overcame the odds of little wind and a strong tide to finish first in the spinnaker class in Cape-to-Cape Challenge XI. Points from the Aug. 3 race across Delaware Bay from Cape May, N.J., to Lewes were added to points from Aug. 2 races for a total score. Balance finished second overall on the cross-bay race behind Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May’s Mini Max, captained by Pat and Zachery Schultz.

The only other Lewes boat to finish the Aug. 3 race, Mahal, captained by John Nelson, took third in the non-spinnaker class.

Of the 24 starters, 16 boats either retired from the race or did not cross the finish line in the allotted time. Next year’s race will be hosted by Lewes Yacht Club with the races taking place in Delaware Bay the first day followed by the start of the Lewes-to-Cape May race the following day.
