Barbara F. Spehr, beloved mother, grandmother
Barbara F. Spehr of Lewes passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at home. Born in Bellevue, Ohio, she lived the majority of her youth in Ohio before she married Paul C. Spehr and moved to Washington, D.C.
Barbara worked as an interior designer for various studios and fine furniture businesses in the D.C. metro area. After retirement, she moved to Lewes and enjoyed an active life of various clubs and classes. She was an active member of the Cape Henlopen Senior Center until the last year of her life. She was an avid reader who enjoyed many different aspects of writing. She was a patron of all aspects of the arts. Barbara was a wonderful cook who enjoyed hosting dinner and holiday parties.
Barbara is joining her parents, George Sr. and Helen B.; her brother, George Jr.; her sister, Eleanor Bewick; and her son, Mark S. Spehr. She leaves behind her children, Elizabeth Spehr, Katherine Zabrucky (Michael), and Christopher F. Spehr; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth L. Spehr; grandchildren, Timothy Shaw, Christopher Shaw, Daniel Shaw (Brittany), Julian Spehr (Hannah), Samantha Swearingen (Connor), Nicholas Spehr Gettings and Alexander Spehr; and great-grandson, Rhys Swearingen.
We would like to thank AccentCare Hospice and Mom's caregiver, Lateisha Taylor, who helped Mom at the end of her life.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, at St. George's Chapel, 20271 Beaver Dam Road, Harbeson. After the service, a reception will follow at the church hall.
