Barr resignation letter debasing

December 21, 2020

I recommend that everyone read outgoing Attorney General Bill Barr’s Dec. 14 extraordinary and groveling letter of resignation to President Trump, https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/14/politics/ag-barr-resignation-letter/index.html

For someone who purportedly was extremely upset with the criticism he received from Trump, Barr’s praise rang, for me, a hollow note. I, like thousand of other former alumni of the Justice Department, viewed Barr as the worst, most deceitful and dangerous man to have held that position, far exceeding the misdeeds of convicted felon John Mitchell, Nixon’s former AG.

Barr writes, “I am proud to have played a role in the many successes and unprecedented achievements you have delivered to the American people.” By “playing a role” I presume, Barr is referring, in part, to his complete misrepresentation of the results of the Mueller Report; his unwarranted intervention in the sentencing of Trump’s crony, Roger Stone, the convicted felon and “stop the steal” trickster; his unsuccessful efforts to nullify the conviction of admitted felon Gen. Flynn, who twice pleaded guilty to these charges and who reneged on his obligations under his plea agreement; his removal of the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York as a means of shielding Trump from criminal prosecution; and his thwarting of the delivery of the whistleblower complaint to Congress, in violation of the law, relating to Trump’s effort to bribe the president of the Ukraine with military aid in return for “dirt” on his political opponent, Joe Biden; among his more notable “achievements” for the American people.

Despite Barr’s largely illegal and unjustifiable efforts to benefit Trump, in defiance of the rule of law, Barr’s efforts were, of course, not sufficient to meet Trump’s insatiable desire for “loyalty,” in that Barr failed to have President-elect Biden arrested and charged during the campaign, his failure to disclose a criminal tax investigation of Biden’s son, Hunter, which would have violated long-standing DOJ policy, but, most unforgivable of all, Barr’s announcement that he’d not found widespread evidence of fraud sufficient to overturn the election results.

Trump doesn’t want “loyalty”; he wants “fealty.” Barr’s inactions resulted in numerous reports of Trump’s seriously considering firing this shameless slave of an AG. Rather than a simple statement resigning, Barr determined to further debase himself with an unctuous letter of tribute to the totally unworthy and ungrateful Trump. History will not be kind to either of them.
