Bayhealth's Surguy one of only two urologic nurse practitioners in state

April 12, 2022

Wendy Surguy, FNP, CUNP, has been a nurse since 1997 and is currently a family nurse practitioner who has worked at Bayhealth Urology since 2015.

She was drawn to urology through her interest in being a part of a pelvic floor clinic, and over the last six years, has grown to enjoy all aspects of urology practice. In November 2020, Surguy became a certified urologic nurse practitioner, which allows her to see patients with urologic needs throughout the lifespan. Currently, Surguy is one of two people who hold this certification in Delaware.

Surguy typically spends her mornings completing inpatient hospital rounds and mid-morning into afternoons seeing patients in the office. She enjoys interacting with patients and likes the opportunity to spend time educating them on their condition with a focus on preventing disease progression. It is extremely beneficial for patients as well as healthcare institutions for providers to have the opportunity to be more involved in their patients’ care. Surguy loves spending one-on-one time with patients to offer them information that will keep them healthy and prevent hospitalizations.

With every year, patient care and treatment guidelines change. Surguy feels it is critical for all providers to remain knowledgeable regarding their specialties in order to provide the best possible patient care. Surguy enjoys the challenge of keeping up to date in urology and being a part of a team of providers who excel in caring for patients living in a small community.

Recently, Surguy was involved in creating the Adult Urinary Catheter Removal Protocol, which gives providers and nursing clinicians a guideline for patients who require indwelling foley catheters. It allows more autonomy with catheter selection, better patient outcomes and guidance on infection prevention.

The Bayhealth team is grateful for dedicated advanced practice clinicians like Surguy, and other staff members who dedicate themselves to exceptional patient care.
