Beacon girls, Mariner boys win battle of the district middle schools

Beacon and Mariner faced off for their annual battle of the Cape district at Cape Henlopen High School Feb. 6. The Beacon girls squeaked out a 24-20 victory.

Brianna Loper and Haley Archambault led Beacon with six points each. Natalya Roundtree and Diana Nauman scored four and three points, respectively. Mya Maull added two points, while Lainey Shockro hit a foul shot for one point.

Mackinzie Brown was high scorer for Mariner with six points. Cailyn Bledsoe scored five points, Ava Iacono tallied four and Tatum Friend and Sara Narr each scored two. Jessica Ashley made a single foul shot.

Beacon ended its season at 6-4, while Mariner finished at 6-5.

The Mariner boys started out hot and didn’t let up, as they claimed a 44-24 victory over Beacon.

Trey Leggins scored for Mariner with 18 points. Nick Cox added 14 points, Kai Bickham scored four, and BJ Mosley, Darrell Trotter, David Maker, Derrieus Johnson each hit for two.

Daeshaun Lewis led Beacon with six points, while Owen Daminger added four and Dylan Fannin, Neamiah Ricketts and Charles Casas tallied three. Liam O’Donnell, Jeremiah Jackson scored two and Stephane Etienne hit a foul shot.

Mariner ends its regular season at 10-1, while Beacon closes its regular season at 7-3.
