Thirty teams and more than 900 athletes from up and down the state of Delaware converged on Killens Pond State Park in Felton Oct. 29, for the DAAD Middle School Cross Country Championship.
The Beacon girls won the team title with 89 points, putting four runners in the top 20. Fred Thomas finished fifth with 198 points, while Mariner was 11th with 301 points. Sussex Academy was 17th with 399 points.
Individually, Beacon was led by Emily Hilton with a second-place finish in 13:19. Hilton, who was undefeated this year in dual meets, finished just 10 seconds behind champion Dayna Wiggins of Everett Meredith, who ran 13:09. Brielle Antos of Beacon was eighth in 13:48, while teammates Addison Farrell took 14th in 14:02 and Elle Stretch was 18th in 14:17. Tenley Hazzard led Fred Thomas in 19th place in 14:18, while Stella Hastings led Mariner in 20th with a time of 14:25. Eva Piper led her Sussex Academy team in 21st with a time of 14:26.
In the boys’ A Division, Fred Thomas finished fourth with 181 points, followed by Mariner in fifth with 183 points. Beacon finished 10th with 349 points, while Sussex Academy was 13th with 371 points.
Individually, Noa Urrestarazu of Mariner led the downstate finishers with a 13th-place finish in 13:01, while Logan Cole of Mariner finished 15th in 13:03. Logan Archer of Fred Thomas finished 17th in 13:05, while Kai Mundok of Sussex Academy was 18th in 13:10 and Thomas Bonk led Beacon in 35th in 13:29.
