The Beacon girls’ lacrosse team rolled over sister school Mariner May 10 at Champions Stadium, winning 12-2 to enhance its record to 10-0 with one home game remaining against Smyrna (4-3) Tuesday, May 14. The Beacon girls look to join two other undefeated teams this school year, including field hockey (9-0) and basketball (13-0).

“Look how many kids are out there warming up,” said Beacon coach Lynn Richardson. “Middle school sports are pushing the best kids to be better while keeping the door open for all young, developing players. Next year with the opening of the Fred Thomas School, the two teams you see out here today will spread out and become three teams. More sports and more opportunities for players.”

Goal scorers for Beacon were Mikaela Gordon with three; Alexis Zolper, Mia Pettengill and Hazel Macari with two each; and single goals from Mackenzie Kujpa, Annabelle Trego-Mumford and Harper Derrick. Beacon assists were Delaney Senard with two and Zolper, Gordon, Kupa, Pettengell and Mancari with one apiece. Claire Hassell had four saves in goal.

Meredith Frederick scored twice for Mariner. Penelope Bohl, a sixth-grader, was credited with four saves in goal.

Mariner concluded the season with a record of 6-4.

Many of the Beacon and Mariner players are teammates on Atlantic Lacrosse and Eastern Shore lacrosse teams that continue to play into the summer.

There are 35 players on the Beacon roster that includes 12 eighth-graders. There are 24 players on the Mariner roster, including 10 eighth-graders.

Mariner is coached by Megan Burns and Dana Plummer.

Watching the girls improve season to season – or even game to game – is something special,” Burns said. ”The team spirit and chemistry and comradeship was tremendous. It has been something special coaching this Mariner crew – truly an honor and highlight in my career and life.”
