Beacon soccer shuts out Mariner

Rain couldn’t dampen players’ spirit
May 14, 2019

The rainy night could not stop the Beacon versus Mariner soccer rivalry May 13, as the back-and-forth game made for an exciting contest for the crowd gathered under umbrellas.

Beacon scored three goals and held the Mariner Vikings scoreless in the shutout at Cape’s Legends Stadium.

"It was a good night for the girls, even though the weather wasn’t great,” said Beacon coach Justin Voorheis. “It was a solid team effort all around; the girls had fun and they won the game for Lo." (Lauralee Mobius, an eighth-grader on the Beacon squad, broke her arm against Dover.)

“Our girls had a great season,” said Mariner coach Billy Swontek. “This team had a lot of talent and great people on it. Our eighth-graders were amazing leaders, and I hope to see them playing at the high school level next spring.”

Libby Rossi hit the back of the twine with two goals, while Lulu Rishko added one. Brianna Loper made six stops in the Beacon cage.

Even though Beacon scored bragging rights for the year, the Cape name on the jerseys told more of the story of camaraderie of the future teammates.
