Beebe welcomes Dr. John Zapas as surgeon-in-chief
Beebe Healthcare announced the appointment of John Zapas, MD, FACS, as surgeon-in-chief.
Zapas brings extensive experience and a track record of excellence in surgical leadership with acute care facilities and medical groups. In his new role, he will oversee the provision of care for all Beebe's surgical services, focusing on the continuous expansion and enhancement of comprehensive surgical care to meet the evolving needs of the growing and aging community.
“Dr. Zapas' leadership, expertise and dedication will further strengthen Beebe's commitment to deliver exceptional surgical care,” said Paul R. Sierzenski, MD, MSHQS, CPE, FACEP, senior vice president and chief physician executive at Beebe Healthcare. “His appointment as surgeon-in-chief builds on the longtime contributions and achievements of Dr. James Spellman, now serving as a Beebe board member in addition to caring for his patients. Beebe is moving forward in our mission to provide the highest quality care to the people of Sussex County.”
Zapas said his leadership priorities include managing the surgical services team, recruiting highly skilled surgical specialists and maintaining a steadfast focus on quality, safety, program development, patient experience and outcomes.

Zapas background includes serving as medical director of surgical specialists at Frederick Health Medical Group in Maryland, and as an attending physician and chief of surgical oncology at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center's Cancer Institute. A passionate advocate for minimally invasive surgery, Zapas performs nearly all of his procedures using the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.
Over the years, Dr. Zapas has achieved numerous certifications in alignment with his clinical focus. In addition to the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, he is a certified user of the CyberKnife Robotic Stereotactic System. He is also certified by Lean Six Sigma and the American Board of Surgery.
