Beginner white-line woodcut print class set April 22-23
White-line woodcut artist Fred Dylla will teach a two-day course on the art form from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, April 22 and 23, at the Lewes Public Library.
This distinctive technique produces full-color prints from a single carved wood block. In the beginner class, participants will learn to create a conceptual drawing, transfer the drawing to a wood block, carve and paint the block, and finally transfer the image to the printing paper. No previous knowledge of wood block printing or woodcarving is necessary.
Students will bring their own watercolor paints and brushes. Attendees will be provided with necessary materials including wood block, Japanese printing paper and carving tool to produce at least one print by the end of the course.
The course cost includes a materials fee to be paid directly to the artist.
The art form was invented over a century ago in Provincetown, Mass. A resident of Lewes, Dylla has been teaching the technique in the Delmarva region for the last eight years.
