Bessie Anne Vickers, retired letter carrier

April 8, 2024

Bessie Anne Vickers, 81, of Frankford, passed away peacefully at home Friday, April 5, 2024. She was born Jan. 18, 1943, in Delmar, Md., daughter of the late James and Gladys Davis.

Bessie worked as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years from 1979 until her retirement in 2008 out of the Frankford Post Office. She held positions on several committees throughout her career but her most loved were state steward and president of the Delaware National Rural Letter Carrier Association, which she held for many years. In addition, she was part of the first all-female board for any state association. She enjoyed her work serving her customers, as well as representing Delaware at the national conventions, learning all she could to assist her fellow carriers in the state. She also helped put together the newsletter for the state association and continued to do so even after her retirement. Bessie also worked alongside her late husband on the family farm in their early years together. Her love of the outdoors was evident in her love of gardening. She, alongside her husband, took great pride and pleasure in growing vegetables of all sorts to enjoy and share with family and friends, which she continued after her husband's passing. She could also be seen during the fall, spring and summer mowing her grass, which brought her much joy. She was a member of Line Church in Delmar and a dedicated band mom, helping establish the band booster organization at Selbyville Middle School that continued to Indian River High School. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly. Bessie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be remembered for her greatest attribute, every day’s goal was to make someone smile and laugh.

In addition to her parents; Bessie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Donaway; and her brother, James. D. Davis Jr. She is survived by her son, William Dee Vickers (Michelle) of Frankford; her daughter, Deanna Mae Price (Darrin) of Smyrna; five grandchildren, Ryan Price (Jacey), Madison Price, Alexa Price, Miranda Vickers and David Vickers; two great-grandchildren, Adalynn Price and Emilia Price; and one sister, Jessie Bowen (Richard). She is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 13, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Dagsboro Redmen's Cemetery, Dagsboro.
