My lovely, sweet mother had severe bone disease that caused her to lose mobility the last 20 years of her life. When she became non-ambulatory, it became very difficult to take her to experience the beauty of the ocean. My father was her caregiver and a hero, managing the exhausting tasks day in and day out, and still trying to take her to the beach.
Sure, there are special wheelchairs and special carpets to get down the sand, but that is not good enough! It takes a caregiver a herculean effort to manage that. These manipulatives are a false sense of help and a false sense of progress for disabled persons.
How can disabled persons access a close-up experience of the ocean with ease?
Is there a way for beach towns to provide a vehicle to drive them directly down the sand to the ocean? The carpet down the sand is nonsense and does not give real access to the ocean. We need a real solution.
