Big box stores bode ominous message

November 14, 2019

The article in the Nov. 12 Cape Gazette announcing the closing of Kmart and Peebles in Rehoboth Beach is just another reminder of the changing landscape of retailing. Brick and mortar is out, and digital shopping is in.

Let us commit to reminding the powers that be of this the next time someone has the brilliant idea of building a megamall in Sussex County. The approval and construction of any type of mall setting would only result in an endless parade of openings, closings, and vacancies much like is being seen throughout many parts of the country.

Those who have stewardship over the nonrenewable assets of land and the life that land supports must be held accountable to future generations and not just greed and self-promotion.
