Bike to the Beach hosted its annual 100-mile ride from the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay to Dewey Beach on a hot, sunny day July 31.

This year's event took place with a ride beginning in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Md., and an eight-mile family challenge that began at Midway Baptist Church off Route 24 toward Long Neck.

Ben Dalley, Bike to the Beach director of operations, said 452 riders made the trip from D.C. and 79 made it from Baltimore. He said 20 riders participated in the family ride portion.

The two long rides left at the same time before meeting in Annapolis, Md., for transportation over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Kent Island. From there, riders finished in Dewey Beach.

Dalley said Aug. 4, Bike to the Beach DC had raised close to $380,000, and matching donations and checks were still coming in. He said the Bike to the Beach MD raised nearly $40,000.
