I wonder if any of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee members travel on Savannah Road during the months of May, June, July, August or September during the hours of 3 to 7 p.m.? If you are lucky, you have a kind driver who will let you out of Cedar Ave. onto Savannah Road. Then it is a 15-minute ride to get to the light at Gills Neck Road at Front Street. This is a three- to four-block ride. People, including children 8, 9 and 10 years of age, are on bikes. Sometimes the parents pay attention to the kids, and sometimes they do not. They do not observe the rules of the road. People on bikes dart in and out of traffic and cut cars off, riding on the road and sidewalk. Yikes!
The changes purposed for the canal bridge will be much more dangerous for drivers and bicycle riders, not to mention the increase in travel time from the beach area to downtown Lewes. All bikes should be walked over the narrow canal bridge on the sidewalk away from automobile traffic. Most bike riders are tourists who leave their brains at home when they go on vacation, especially where safety is concerned. They are out to have fun, period. Since Lewes is a tourist/vacation destination, the city of Lewes needs to think of ways to keep visitors safe.
A narrow bridge full of cars, trucks and cars pulling boats and RVs is not the place for bicycles, especially with children on them. The future does not look like there will be less traffic only more, since people are moving to Lewes to live year-round.
