The 14th annual Blue-Gold All-Star 5K run set off June 10 from Irish Eyes in Lewes with 176 runners along with 16 one-mile walkers and one bandit still at large.
The race produces places and times broken down into age groups, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story of 62 years of Blue-Gold tradition that are embedded in the game.
Carla Phillips Yygve, 45, who ran 29:49, honored her father Jack, a Rehoboth High School graduate in 1957 who intercepted two passes in the Blue-Gold game and is tied with nine others for the game record.
Coach Rob Schroeder, who was head coach of the Gold team in 1986, walked in the race.
Jeff Young, 26, from Philly won the race in 17:16. Susan Young, 39, a former Delmar Wildcat, was overall winner for the women in 20:58.
Masters winners were Mike Sewell, 47, in 18:44 and Meryl Ludwig, 51, in 22:33.
The young guns were tearing it up in the race. Bennett Brumbley, 9, ran 22:32 followed by Jacob Hehn, 9, 25:04 and Cole Beauchamp, just 4 years old, who actually ran the entire distance in 55:34.
Evan Sydnor, 12, won the male 10-13 age group in 22:21 followed by Logan Serpico in 24:38.
Olivia Montini placed first in the female 10-13 group with a time of 22:02, as she was chased by Katie Kuhlman in 25:38 and Grace Hudson in 28:25.
Colin Craig won the male 14-19 in 21:07, while Walter Schroeder was second in 21:46 followed by Austen Cave 22:14 and Aaron Cave in 23:22.
Ashlyn Cave, 14, won her age group in 30:15 and was doused by her brothers with water, and the hockey player reacted like a Delmar Wildcat. August Cave, 45, the mother of the Cave clan, ran 28:32.
Married couple Karen and Brian Johnson from Bethany Beach, a short plane ride from Lancaster, Pa. (he’s a pilot), won their age groups, as Karen captured the 50-54 in 24:17 and Brian won the 60-64 category in 21:32.
The weekend of June 16-18 is the Triple Crown Series beginning with the 7 p.m. Friday Georgetown Public Library 5K, followed by the Saturday Milton Irish Eyes 5K Dash at 8 a.m. and the Sunday Father’s Day 5K at 7:30 a.m. on Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach.
