Book club donates to Lewes library children's programs

December 5, 2021

Representatives from the Independence community book club in Millsboro recently presented a check for $850 to Lewes library staff to support its children's literacy efforts.

The funds were generated from the book club's first benefit spelling bee, including team participation fees and individual contributions.

The bee competition included four rounds of five words each, with one point for each correct answer in round one up to four points each in round four. In the bonus round, teams could wage all, part or none of their total points. The winning team, Creative Spellers, finished with a total of 82 points and correctly spelled the bonus word, "insouciance." Winning team members were Evey Herschler, captain, and Dave Herschler, Mary Beth Casey and Maddie Thompson.

More than 24 volunteers served on committees and assisted with logistics. Special thanks go to event Co-chairs Linda D'Aloisio and Jeff Gordon, and committee Chairs Ann and Jeff Leisenring, scorekeepers; Susan Savard and Carlene Spangler, word selection; and Janet Denson, graphics. Event organizers are hopeful there will be a second literacy-related benefit bee next year.
