Cape Henlopen High School senior Addison Bowman has received Sen. Chris Coons’ principal nomination for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. This coveted award conveys full admission into West Point, where she will be attending this fall.
Ever since Bowman was a young girl, in competition with her brothers and in honor of her veteran grandfather, she dreamed of joining the military. “Since then, I have only thought of service as a career path for me,” Bowman said.
She realized that in order to achieve her goal of one day joining the Army, she would have to work extremely hard, both academically and athletically. Bowman dedicated several years to building up a strong reputation and motivation to accomplish her objectives.
Bowman was filled with joy when she found out she won the award, as were her parents and grandfather. “I was so very honored to receive that [nomination] from Sen. Coons,” she said.
She plans to leave June 30 for her first six weeks of cadet basic training, which consist of physical and military exercises. In August, she will begin to take classes at the military academy, where she hopes to major in psychology.
“I really want to let the school do its job of showing the benefits that the Army will provide for me,” Bowman said. She does not know what her future career will be, but hopes to explore several options. “I know that there will be so many incredible opportunities for me to explore.”
However, before she leaves for training, she must finish out her duties as a Cape Henlopen High School senior. After being class president for the last four years, holding various leadership positions in JROTC, National Honor Society, and taking rigorous Advanced Placement classes, dual enrollment and honors courses, Bowman is ending her high school career looking toward a bright future.
“It took an army to get me to this point, because I really couldn’t have done it without the support of family, friends, and for all the opportunities I had,” said Bowman.
