Candidate forum for state representative of District 20 set Oct. 10
Candidates for State Representative District 20 Republican Stephen Smyk, Democrat John Bucchioni and Libertarian Harry Smouse will square off at a public forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sussex County Wednesday, Oct. 10, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Milton Public Library, 121 Union St.
The nonpartisan format will allow residents in Representative District 20 to ask questions about their particular concerns as well as to gauge each candidate’s capability, knowledge and sincerity. Following brief opening statements by the candidates, the entire forum will be devoted to written questions from the floor. The audience can pick up notecards and pencils for posing questions at the entry door or from monitors in the aisles throughout the program.
The Delaware House of Representatives consists of 41 members, each of whom is elected to a two-year term. All revenue-generating legislation must begin in the House. State representatives introduce and vote on proposed legislation, approve the annual budget for the state, and serve on assigned committees. Residents can find their representative district number on their Delaware polling place card or by entering their address on websites VOTE 411.org or ivote.de.gov.
Incumbent Smyk and challengers Bucchioni and Smouse have been asked to post background information and their answers to questions on key issues on VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters’ online voters’ guide. Voters can go to the website and compare the candidates’ views on the state economy and budget challenges, water quality, gun violence, manufactured housing policy, the Delaware voting system, and legalization of non-medical marijuana.
Information on candidates for other state and Sussex County offices can also be found on the VOTE411 website. The VOTE411 system covers all the 2018 state-wide and county-level races in the November 6 General elections. Voters can compare candidates for state and local offices side-by-side and print a customized ballot, as well as register to vote, apply for absentee ballots, or learn about voting rules and procedures in our state.
