Cannonball 5K Run and Trenny Elliott Memorial Walk set Sept. 8

September 5, 2019

For the 16th year, the Lewes Historical Society will present the Cannonball 5K Run and Trenny Elliott Memorial Walk at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 8. The race begins at the historical society campus at 110 Shipcarpenter St., and benefits the society's preservation and educational programming.

Designed to be a tour of historic Lewes, and often referred to as the most beautiful race course in Delaware, the route includes breathtaking scenery along Pilottown Road and views of the Great Marsh, Shipcarpenter Square, Second Street and the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

“We kept everything the same,” said race coordinator Tim Bamforth, who’s been involved since the first year. “The course is unique and goes by so many landmarks in the town. No other race that I have ever been involved with has such historic significance.”

For those interested in walking the course, the Trenny Elliott Walk is held in memory of Trennick Marvil "Trenny" Elliott. LHS Board Chair Libby Owen said, “Trenny and her husband, George Elliott, were very involved in the society. Her father was the first chairman of the board, and they loved walking through the town.”

“The race is also known for the great refreshments afterward. The runners rave about it every year,” said Bamforth. This year, breakfast will be provided for the runners by Nectar Restuarant in Lewes. Weis Market will supply oranges and water for each participant.
