Former Cape Henlopen High School baseball player Mason Fluharty is heading to the World Series as a reliever on the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays punched their ticket with a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in the decisive Game 7 of the American League Championship Series in Toronto Oct. 20.
The Blue Jays will face the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Game 1 is set for Friday, Oct. 24, in Toronto.
Fluharty has pitched in seven games so far this postseason, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven batters. During the regular season, he pitched 52.2 innings across 55 games, posting a 4.44 ERA with 56 strikeouts during his rookie campaign.
Fluharty played on the 2018 Cape state championship team, where he closed out the championship game with a strikeout. Also on that team were Athletics infielder Zack Gelof, Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Jake Gelof and Washington Nationals prospect Luke Johnson.
Fluharty graduated in 2019 and attended Liberty University, where he was a standout pitcher for the Flames. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2022.
