Cape 8-10 softball all-stars win opener, drop next two
After opening the District 3 8-10 softball all-star tournament with a 20-7 win over Georgetown July 6, the Cape all-stars were bested by Lower Sussex July 8 and then host Laurel July 9, knocking them out of the playoff field.
Georgetown
The Cape girls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before going down 6-3 in the third. Scoring one in the fourth, Cape was down 6-4 heading into the fifth inning. With an explosion of offense, Cape tallied eight runs each in back-to-back innings while conceding only one to take the game 20-7. Pyper Willey led the offense with five RBIs, three runs scored and two hits. Gia Scott and Abby Frey both tied Willey with three runs, while Scott tied Willey and Emma Gambale for the team lead with two hits. Frey was in the circle, striking out 14 over six innings of work.
Lower Sussex
Skylee Perry is a force to be reckoned with on Lower Sussex, remaining perfect through 4.1 innings. Offense was hard to come by for Cape. Frey was in the circle again, striking out six over four innings, and notching Cape’s first hit and lone run of the ball game. She was driven in on a single to left field by Willey. Lower Sussex scored three each in the third and fourth innings before Frey scored in the top of the fifth. Plating three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Lower Sussex had the bases loaded with one out when Charlie Starkey stepped to the plate in the 9-1 game. Driving one into the left-center gap, Starkey cleared the bases and slid into home herself for an inside-the-park grand slam to give Lower Sussex a walk-off 13-1 win.
Laurel
Playing in Laurel for the third time in four days, Cape trailed the host team early July 9, as Laurel put up 19 runs over the first four frames. Ironically, Cape was the home team but only scored one in the bottom of the fourth when Willey singled in Scott with two outs. The girls could not come within the mercy-rule limit and were knocked out when Laurel recorded the third out to seal a 19-1 victory.
