Cape 8-10 softball falls twice to MOT

The Cape Major League softball all-stars dropped a pair of games to Middletown, Odessa, Townsend July 22 and 23, as MOT claimed the state championship in the 8-10 bracket. 

After winning the first two games of the tournament, Cape fell to MOT 3-0 July 22 to set up a winner-take-all game July 23. MOT outlasted Cape again the next night, winning 11-2 to win the state title. 

In the July 22 game, the MOT all-stars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the third.

Cape could only muster three hits in the game. Mikayla Pollard went 2-for-3, while Taylor Huff hit a single. 

MOT finished with six hits. Ella Austin went 2-for-2, while teammates Gia Gambino, Brynleigh Bennett, Molly Frantz and Loghan Smoke each had a hit. Gambino knocked in a run.

Pollard started in the circle for Cape, tossing four innings and striking out six batters. Riley Windish came in from the bullpen for the fifth and struck out two.

MOT pitcher Aubrey Martin struck out 13 batters.

On July 23, MOT jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring runs in each of the first four innings. After Cape scored two in the top of the first, MOT responded with three in the bottom. They added two in the second, one in the third and four in the fifth. 

Cape’s Olivia Lancaster went 1-for-2 with both of the team’s RBIs. Lilly Frey, Pollard and Carlee Cabello each had a hit. 

Martin tossed six innings for MOT, allowing just four hits and striking out 12 batters.

Windish got the start for Cape. She struck out six batters in 3.1 innings. Pollard finished the final 1.2 innings, striking out four batters.
