September 12, 2022

The Bi-State Challenge at Champions Stadium Sept. 9-10 featured Delmar and Cape on the Delaware side, and Pocomoke and Severna Park on the Maryland side.

Delmar has won the last six Division II state titles, posting a 98-game winning streak dating back to 2016. Cape Henlopen has won 10 state championships since 2011 and 12 in school history.

Pocomoke is the defending 1A Maryland state champion; the program has won 20 state titles. Severna Park is the defending 4A Maryland state champion and has won 25 titles since 1975.

Delaware dominated the weekend, with Pocomoke falling to Cape 5-0 then Delmar 8-0, while Severna Park lost to Delmar 9-1 and Cape 4-0.

“Two hot days in a row and our kids played well,” said Cape coach Kate Austin. “Severna Park is a solid team. It's important not to let them score first. I’m sure they will be going after another state title in Maryland. One thing our kids learn by playing championship programs is to play hard and play fast the entire game.”

Cape dominated Pocomoke Sept. 9, outshooting the Warriors 17-4 with a 23-3 advantage in penalty corners. Cape goals were scored by freshmen Alysa McCarthy with two and Avary Miller with one, and veterans Hannah Maney and Grace Wiggins each added a score.

Cape’s 4-0 win over Severna Park featured a pair of goals each by Addy Basile and Lexi Truitt. Cape had a 16-10 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.

The newly configured backline of Truitt, Devon DeGregory and Lina Frederick protected goalkeeper Morgan Newcomb for eight quarters of shutout hockey.

The Delmar Wildcats went cat-scratch fever on the Falcons of Severna Park with a 30-5 shots-on-goal advantage. Maci Bradford scored four goals, Josie Hollamon tallied three, and Jordyn Hollamon and Laela Brown each had one.

Delmar’s 8-0 win over Pocomoke featured Jordyn Hollamon and Bradford with three goals apiece, and Josie Hollamon with two.

Delmar will next play Wilmington Friends at DE Turf at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13. Cape next plays at Sussex Tech at 4 p.m., Sept. 13.
