Cape baseball knocks off Riders 11-5

March 28, 2022

The Cape baseball team scored six runs in the first inning March 25 against Caesar Rodney, which would be all they needed, as they defeated the Riders 11-5 to open the regular season at Chris Short Field.

Senior second baseman Austin Rhue led the Vikings with a triple, double and two singles on the day, garnering a .611 slugging percentage. He also scored three runs and stole two bases in the Cape victory.

“I just waited on the fastball and took them to right,” said Rhue. “I’ve been hitting a lot each day and wanted to try and be aggressive at the plate.”

Brenn Scott slammed two hits and knocked in three runs. Nick Cox drove in three runs on his single in the first inning. Paris Mitchell knocked in two runs on two hits. Luke Crouch drove in a run on his single. Brian Fleming and Sam Kerstetter each had a single.

“We were excited to get going, and we sure did in the first inning,” said Cape manager Ben Evick. “We sent everyone to the plate and scored six runs. Austin Rhue had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-4. Josh Reinhold was tough on the mound, picking up the win.”

Reinhold, a senior, threw 5.2 innings for the home team, striking out four batters while giving up just three earned runs.

“All of us were super pumped and ready to start the season with a bang,” Reinhold said. “The bats came out hot and we were aggressive at the plate, and it paid off for us.”

Caesar Rodney senior Mason Bush went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Riders.

The Vikings take on 1-1 Dover Tuesday, March 29, at Chris Short Field. The Senators fell 8-1 to Sussex Tech March 25 after defeating Woodbridge 2-0 March 22.
