Cape baseball wins first game in Hawaii

April 22, 2019

The Cape baseball squad defeated Waimea 9-3 April 20 to kick off their spring break week in Hawaii.

Vikings southpaw Mason Fluharty picked up the win, pitching four innings and striking out seven. He did not give up an earned run. Parker Brown and Sean Clendaniel came in from the bullpen to close out the game.

Ryan Gibbons, Timmy Vitella, Levi Clifton, Fluharty, Jackson Ostroski, and Luke Smailer all had hits for the Vikings.

Smailer knocked in two runs, while Matt Newcomb, Clifton, Hunter Rauch and Grant Evans each picked up an RBI.

“We did a nice job of taking advantage of some timely hits when we worked counts and got some walks,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “They took a 1-0 lead on an error in the first inning, and we were able to respond quickly. Mason [Fluharty] settled in nicely and got ahead in counts. We were able to keep pitch counts low and get everyone involved. The whole community was at the game, and we had a big luau afterward. A couple players from Waimea High had gone boar hunting the day before, so our kids got smoked wild boar and many other local foods.”
